Animals on wheels go back a long time at Steiff. As early as 1892, the first Steiff catalogues include bears, elephants and camels on cast-iron wheels, which children love to ride or pull along. Their framework was initially made of wood, then of iron, to lend the necessary stability and sturdiness for daily play. The metal wheels first used were later replaced by wooden wheels which, to quote the 1921 catalogue, led to ”… an amazing light, elegant and almost noiseless movement …”.

Like the original, this bear stands on a metal frame with brown wooden wheels and is wearing a light-brown leather collar. He also has a pull-the-cord voice opereated by a metal ring on his back. The bear is made by hand from the finest mohair in the traditional manner and his nose  and claws are stitched by hand too.
