Well over 126 years ago on May 8,1899, Max Hermann was born to Johann Hermann and his wife Rosalie in a small village in Thuringia, near the toy capital of the world, Sonneberg. Like most inhabitants of this forest region, in the heart of Germany, Johann earned his money by producing simple wooden toys. As a young schoolboy, Max Hermann had to learn to work in his father's small family business. At the beginning of the century a sales boom for small plush bears broke out in the United States. As a result, the three Johann Hermann children: Arthur, Adelheid and Max took the one-time opportunity and began producing, as documented in old family letters, Hermann Teddy Bears on October 23, 1913.

Max Hermann was only 14 years old at the time and from that day forward his fascination for Teddy bears would never cease. After World War I, when his father Johann passed away, the siblings decided to separate the family business. It was at this time in 1920 that Max Hermann founded his own Teddy bear factory at the birthplace of the first Hermann Teddy Bears. With this step the Max Hermann bears made history. A world war, inflation, economic crisis and last but not least the separation of Germany came and passed. The spirit and the drive from Max Hermann reflect through today in his teddy bears. For the occasion of the 100th birthday of their grandfather and company founder, Max Hermann, the grandchildren presented this special Teddy bear, in the year 1999.
