This has been a classic rattle for many years. Until 1918, it was one of the most well known and beloved baby rattles in the Steiff collection.





Not only does this rattle have a great success story but his realistic craftsmanship, his hand sewn bells, an extra bell in his tummy, the five delicately sewn layers of wings plus the authentic material, makes this one of the real collector’s items. It is made of felt – the material that Margrete Steiff worked with in 1877 in her Filz-Konfektionswaren-Geschäft (Ready-Made Felt Goods Shop) and from which she produced the legendary “little elephant” – the first soft stuffed animal in the world. Since the Steiff trademark “Button in Ear” had not yet been introduced in 1898, the year in which this rattle was “born”, this replica bears the first official button with the elephant symbol.
